A Community Improvement Plan (CIP) is a community planning tool used by municipalities to revitalize areas of a community through programs, grants and incentives. These areas can include:

  • Traditional downtown areas;
  • Areas with significant heritage built form;
  • Employment/Industrial areas;
  • Community-wide to support affordable housing development;
  • Commercial areas; and,
  • Contaminated/Brownfield sites.

Through a Community Improvement Plan, municipalities can:

  • Focus public attention on local priorities;
  • Target areas in transition or in need or repair, rehabilitation and redevelopment;
  • Facilitate and encourage community change in a coordinated manner; and,
  • Stimulate private sector investment through municipal incentive-based programs.

For a CIP to remain relevant and competitive, it is important to undertake a review of our current program from time to time to be sure that it is working best for our communities.

On September 9, 2019, Council directed staff to undertake a review and update of our CIP to review the available program grants, past success, current program participation, project area, etc.
