Remediation for diesel spill in Tottenham

Posted On Friday January 31, 2020

Mill Street and Industrial Road in Tottenham was closed last night (Jan. 30) after a tractor trailer ruptured a diesel tank in the intersection.

New Tecumseth Fire Rescue, Nottawasaga OPP, New Tecumseth Public Works and the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks (MOE) were called to the scene. A spill clean-up company was also brought in and the remediation was completed under the direction of the MOE.

It was estimated that approximately 200-300 litres of diesel leaked on the roadway near catch basins and a creek. Fire crews contained the spill at the catch basins, placed absorbent booms on the creek and contained the spill at the source.

The MOE Environmental Officer attended the water operations facility at Mill & Industrial to confirm the incident did not have any impact on the drinking water system. The MOE also oversaw the spill clean up and was satisfied with the remediation of the roadway, catch basins and creek.

The roadway was reopened after the truck had been removed and all remediation/clean up completed just before 11pm.
