Background
The Ontario government is investing $210 million through the Road Safety Initiatives Fund (RSIF) to help make roads safer in school zones and community safety zones without using speed cameras. The RSIF gives money to municipalities to support road safety steps that are proven to work, such as better signs and more police enforcement. This funding goes to areas where speed cameras were used before or were planned to be used.
The Ontario government has also given $42 million in immediate funding to help add traffic calming measures in school zones and community safety zones that once used municipal speed cameras. In the Town, these safety measures include radar speed signs, silhouette signs, and more frequent police patrols to help keep drivers and pedestrians safe.
Radar Speed Signs
Radar speed signs have been used by the Town for many years. They help remind drivers of the posted speed limit and give instant feedback when someone is driving too fast. These signs are meant to educate drivers and encourage safer speeds.
Silhouette Signs
The silhouette signs are new to the Town. They show a young child holding a sign that asks drivers to slow down. Their purpose is to catch drivers’ attention and remind them to drive safely.
Police Patrols
The Town has contracted the Nottawasaga OPP to carry out speed management in school zones across the community.
