The Town is exploring the development of a new Sports Dome at Geoff S. Gaston Sports Park. If approved by Council, the facility would provide year-round indoor recreation space for local sports organizations, Town programs, and community groups.
The project was initially brought forward by the South Simcoe United Football Club (SSUFC) to address growing demand for indoor training and playing space as participation continues to increase.
If approved, the project would include:
- A FIFA-sized, air-supported Sports Dome
- Approximately 100,750 square feet of indoor space
- An artificial turf playing surface equivalent to four small-sided soccer fields
- An attached building with:
- Washrooms
- Change rooms
- Reception area
- Small office space
- Storage areas
- Upgrades to the existing parking lot, including:
- Improved traffic flow
- Dedicated accessible parking spaces
- New parking lot lighting to enhance safety
The facility would support a variety of sports, recreation programs, and community activities throughout the year.
The proposed Sports Dome would be located at Geoff S. Gaston Sports Park.
The project is currently being considered as part of the 2027 Budget process.
If funding is approved by Council:
- Design work could begin as early as January 2027
- Construction and completion are estimated to take approximately 12 to 15 months
The proposed Sports Dome supports recommendations identified in the Parks, Trails and Open Spaces Master Plan (2024) and would help address the growing demand for year-round indoor recreation space in the community.
In addition to providing a weather-protected facility for sports and recreation, the project would enhance Geoff S. Gaston Sports Park by introducing:
- Permanent indoor washroom facilities
- Drinking water access
- Protection from weather conditions
- Improved parking and site safety
- A facility capable of supporting larger tournaments and events
If approved, the Sports Dome would:
- Increase access to indoor recreation opportunities year-round
- Support growing participation in soccer and other field sports
- Provide space for Town recreation programs and community groups
- Enhance the amenities available at Geoff S. Gaston Sports Park
- Strengthen the community’s ability to host tournaments and special events
- Improve the overall visitor experience through upgraded facilities and site improvements
