Placemaking Week

What is Placemaking Week?
Placemaking Week focuses on making the spaces we live into places we love. It seeks to create a thriving, equitable, and sustainable world through the convergence of values, passion, and action around our public spaces.
The Town of New Tecumseth is posed for significant growth over the next several years and creating thriving, resilient communities will be important! Placemaking can help us engage with our fellow community members to develop meaningful relationships and see our public spaces in new and exciting ways.
In June 2025, the Town hosted its 3rd Annual Placemaking Week. The theme of the 2025 Placemaking Week was Third Places—those special spaces beyond home and work where people gather, connect, and build community. Whether it’s a park, a local café, or even a cluster of trees, Third Places help shape our towns and strengthen our neighborhoods.
Can Trees Be Places Too? - Self Guided Walk |
|
How to do the Walk - Self Guided Please download the "Echoes" app on your smart phone. The app will need to access your GPS. Once you have the app loaded on your phone, you can open the app and refresh your location or you can search Jane's Walk. If you are standing at the Town Hall, it should be the first option (Jane's Walk 2025). Once you have commenced the walk, please walk towards the blue dots identified on the map within the app. Please note the stops along the walk are as follows:
Once you walk within the blue dot area on the map, the app will automatically play the Tree's story in your ear. Enjoy! |
Learn more about Third Places |
|
Coined by American sociologist, Ray Oldenburg, the notion of a “third place” is a space for informal, free social interaction, essential to democracy. Third Places are places that are not your home, school or work, where you can relax, connect with community and build relationship. This could be your local coffee shop, a park or other community space, your local pub, or community garden. These are just a few examples! Third Places are important elements within our built environments. They allow individuals to develop connections and relationships outside of their families and close friendship circles, that can be beneficial for their own wellbeing and the resiliency of their communities.
