Automated Speed Enforcement Program

The Town is addressing the ongoing issue of speeding in New Tecumseth through the implementation of an Automated Speed Enforcement (ASE) program.

New Tecumseth's Automated Speed Enforcement (ASE)  Program uses cameras to reduce speeding, improve driver behaviour, and make the community safer. These cameras work alongside other traffic control measures, such as education, enforcement, and engineering.  We will begin in community safety zones with schools.

What is Automated Speed Enforcement and How Does It Work?

The Town of New Tecumseth's Automated Speed Enforcement (ASE) Program uses cameras to reduce speeding and improve driver behaviour within School and Community Safety Zones. If a vehicle exceeds the posted speed limit in an automated speed enforcement area, the system captures an image that is stored and reviewed by a Provincial Offences Officer. The penalty order, which contains a digitized copy of the image and an enlargement of the licence plate, is mailed to the registered plate holder within 7 days of the offence, outlining next steps and the cost of the associated fine.

Frequently Asked Questions

What if I don't show up for my Screening Appointment?

If you or your agent fails to attend/participate in your scheduled screening meeting, the dispute/screening request will be considered abandoned and the ticket penalty will be upheld. A Failure to Appear Fee of $60 will apply.

What if I must reschedule my Screening/Hearing Review?

A Screening Officer or Hearing Officer review may be rescheduled no later than three (3) business days in advance of the scheduled screening or hearing review by submitting a request by email to ase@newtecumseth.ca or by rescheduling through the booking portal. Only one (1) rescheduling is permitted.

What if I Fail to Pay/Dispute a Ticket within the Timeframe?

If you don't pay or properly begin a dispute option within 30 days of a ticket having been served, the unpaid penalty and fees will be sent to the Ministry of Transportation for collection.

You will be required to pay all outstanding penalties and fees to renew your vehicle plate permit. You may also face additional fees.

What is a Hearing Review?

After completing your Screening Review, if you are not satisfied with the decision of the Screening Officer, you have up to 30 days after the screening decision was delivered to request a review by an independent Hearing Officer. Hearing Reviews are conducted virtually or via telephone. To request a review by a Hearing Officer, you or your agent must submit a Notice of Intention to Appear. Failure to show up for a hearing review will result in a Failure to Appear fee of $60. The decision of the hearing officer is final.

What is the Certificate of Accuracy? How do I Find it Online?

The Officer issuing the charge must first verify that there is a certificate of accuracy for the device issued within 12 months of the date of the offence. The Automated Speed Enforcement System Certificates of Accuracy have been made available for disclosure above the the Camera Location Section. Please refer to the location and offence date on your Automated Speed Enforcement System Offence Notice to find the corresponding Certificate of Accuracy.

How Will Someone be Notified of an Offence?

The ticket is sent to the registered owner of the vehicle by mail.

Why does the Registered Owner of the Vehicle Receive the Ticket Instead of the Driver?

Under the Highway Traffic Act, vehicle owners can be held accountable for how their vehicles are used. This is known as liability offence.

Does the ASE System Only Capture Images During the Time-of-Day Restrictions?

ASE cameras are operational and enforce the posted speed limit 24 hours a day and 7 days a week. Cameras are not passively recording. They are triggered by vehicles travelling faster than the posted speed limit and take a still photo when that happens.

Will it Affect my Demerit Points?

Automated Speed Enforcement penalties under the administrative penalty system will not impact your driving record or demerit points.

 Are Threshold Speeds Being Disclosed?

No. As speed limits are not guidelines - they are the law - there is no need to disclose threshold speeds. Driving at, or below, the posted limit will ensure a ticket is not issued.

Does an Automated Speed Enforcement Ticket Affect Insurance in Ontario?

This is a matter for your insurance company.

Where does the Revenue go from the ASE Tickets?

Funds generated through the Automated Speed Enforcement program will be used to support all operational aspects of the initiative and towards enhancing community safety.

Where do I go to Submit a Complaint Regarding the Administration of Administrative Monetary Penalty System?

If you wish to submit a complaint, please fill out the below form.

Please Note: This complaint cannot be used as the basis to change or void the decision of a Screening or Hearing Officer, including any Administrative Penalties and Administrative Fees due or paid.
