Drinking Water

We provide clean drinking water for residents in the Town of New Tecumseth.

We monitor and report drinking water quality standards for the Alliston and Tottenham Drinking Water Systems. Our reports provide a brief description of the water systems, some of the major works we have undertaken to operate and maintain the systems and the most recent water quality data.

You can view our annual reports online or at the Town Administration Centre in Alliston or Joint Operation Centre in Beeton during regular business hours. They are available in the first quarter of the following year.

Flushing hot water tanks

Due to the characteristics of water, periodic maintenance of your system is required.

When water is heated, it has the tendency to leave iron deposits in the bottom of your hot water tank.  Therefore, it is recommended that periodic flushing of your hot water tank be carried out, in order to avoid brown/yellow/orange water.

Please Follow the Steps Below to Flush Your Hot Water Tank:

  1. Gas Heated Tanks – Turn Gas to “PILOT”
  2. Electric Heated Tanks – Turn Power “OFF”
  3. Turn the cold water supply at the tank “OFF”
  4. Connect a hose to the bottom of the tank, open and drain the tank
  5. When the tank is drained, turn the cold water supply on and off in order to flush the sediment out of the tank
  6. Repeat the above step until the water is “CLEAR”
  7. Disconnect the hose and close the valve
  8. Turn the cold water supply back “ON”
  9. Open the hot water tap in the laundry tub and keep it open until all the air has escaped
  10. Continue this process with the remaining hot water taps throughout the house until all the air is out of the system
  11. Gas Heated Tanks – Turn gas back “ON”
  12. Electric Heated Tanks – Turn power back “ON”
