Preparing for potential Winter Storm
We are closely monitoring Environment Canada’s forecast and the anticipated significant winter storm that is expected across Southern Ontario, including New Tecumseth starting Friday, December 23rd and into the holiday weekend.

Individual Preparedness
- Get out your emergency kit and be prepared to be self-sufficient for at least 72 hours
- Carry an emergency kit in your vehicle. Visit https://www.getprepared.gc.ca for list of items
Travel:
Avoid travel if possible. Travel is expected to be hazardous due to reduced visibility in some locations. Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become icy and slippery. Public Safety Canada encourages everyone to make an emergency plan and get an emergency kit with drinking water, food, medicine, a first-aid kit and a flashlight. For information on emergency plans and kits go to http://www.getprepared.gc.ca.
Winter operations:
Our Public Works crews are prepared for the weather, and we will have crews ready to clear the roads around the clock.
We continue to encourage our residents to follow our Track Your Plow online lookup tool for information about snow clearing in their neighbourhoods at https://www.newtecumseth.ca/en/living-in-our-community/track-your-plow.aspx
During winter storm events, our major roads (primary and secondary roads) are plowed first so emergency vehicles can pass safely. Smaller roads (local streets) are plowed afterward.
Primary roads are roads with the highest speeds and greatest volumes of traffic. Examples include Industrial Parkway, Fletcher Crescent, Centre Street, Dayfoot Street, Queen Street and Mill Street.
Secondary roads are roads with less traffic and usually connect residential roads to primary roads. Examples include Dillane Street, Stewart Street and Tupper Street.
More information on our winter control operations and guidelines can be found on our website at: https://www.newtecumseth.ca/en/living-in-our-community/winter-control-operations.aspx
Public Works after hours emergency contact:
Should there be urgent after-hours concerns such as downed trees on municipal roads or traffic signal repairs, residents are encouraged to call our 24-hour emergency number at 1-877-274-0031.
Potential power outages:
If there are power outages through a storm, Alectra customers can find frequent updates through Alectra’s Twitter channel @AlectraNews or by visiting the outage map on the website: www.alectrautilities.com
To report outages, Alectra Utilities’ customers should call 1-833-ALECTRA (1-833-253-2872).
Should Hydro One customers experience outages, they can report an outage by calling Hydro One at 1-800-434-1235, texting 92887, through the company’s outage app or website at www.hydroone.com/outages
In the event of downed powerlines, stay at least 10 metres away (the length of a school bus) and call 911 immediately.
Facility closures
The Town Hall and Joint Operations Centre will close at noon on Friday, December 23rd for the holidays, as planned.
Given the advisories and recommendations from Environment Canada to avoid unnecessary travel, we will be closing our recreation facilities on Saturday, December 24th.
