Flags at Half-Mast in Recognition of Red Dress Day
Mayor Richard Norcross, Town Council, and the Town of New Tecumseth mark May 5th the National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls and 2SLGBTQI+ People (MMIWG2S), also known as Red Dress Day—a day of remembrance, reflection, and action.
Observed annually across Canada, Red Dress Day honours the lives and legacies of those who are missing and murdered and brings attention to the ongoing crisis that continues to impact Indigenous communities. Red Dress Day was inspired by the work of Métis artist Jaime Black, using red dresses as a powerful symbol of the individuals who are missing and those who have been taken.
By lowering flags, we honour those lost and reaffirm our commitment to awareness, reflection, and solidarity with families and communities who continue to seek justice, healing, and meaningful change. Community members are encouraged to wear red as a visible show of support and remembrance.
