Town of New Tecumseth Recognizes National Day for Truth and Reconciliation Through Learning, Reflection and Action

September 28, 2026

On September 30, the Town of New Tecumseth will join communities across Canada in recognizing the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, a day to honour Residential School Survivors, remember the children who never returned home, and reflect on the ongoing journey toward truth, healing and reconciliation.

This year, the Town has introduced several initiatives aimed at fostering learning, understanding and meaningful dialogue. These efforts reflect a growing commitment to reconciliation and recognize that this work extends beyond a single day of observance.

“Truth and Reconciliation is a responsibility we all share,” said Mayor Richard Norcross. “As a municipality, we have an important role to play in creating opportunities for education, reflection and understanding. The initiatives we’ve undertaken this year are just one step in our ongoing journey toward reconciliation, and we remain committed to continuing this important work.”

A key milestone was the creation of an informal staff-led Truth and Reconciliation committee, bringing together employees from across the organization who are committed to advancing awareness and education. Throughout September, staff also participated in a weekly educational email series that explored Indigenous history, teachings, perspectives and the importance of reconciliation.

On September 30, the Town will host its first learning and reflection session dedicated to the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, providing an opportunity to hear Indigenous perspectives, deepen understanding and reflect on how reconciliation can be supported through municipal work. The Town will also be hosting a flag raising ceremony at Town Hall, inviting residents to gather in remembrance, reflection and solidarity.

Residents and visitors are also encouraged to visit the travelling exhibits currently on display at the Sir Frederick Banting Homestead and the Museum on the Boyne. Through stories of resilience, survival and healing, the exhibits provide opportunities to learn about the lasting impacts of Canada’s residential school system and to engage in ongoing conversations about truth and reconciliation. The exhibits will run until October 31.
